In most Brazilian contemporary music history books, many important personalities that were key figures of the Brazilian music evolution and modernization are never mentioned. One of this forgotten Brazilian music innovators is drummer Edison Machado. With his unique style, Edison was, in the 60's, the most active drummer of the new generation of artists whom embarked in the new style of samba playing of the time, the bossa nova, that captivates the audiences throughout the world.

At that time Edison was the drummer who recorded the first releases of the most important artists and future stars of the bossa nova genre. He was the first drummer who played the Samba using cymbals on the drum set.

He can be heard on the first recordings of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Elis Regina, Maria Bethânia, Jorge Benjor, Edu Lobo, Nara Leão, Sergio Mendes, among others. His trio, The Bossa 3, was the first internationally bossa nova trio recorded, and appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. His LP "Edison Machado é Samba novo", is until today the single most important Brazilian instrumental music album ever released.

His sensibility and style set the standard of the bossa nova genre, and his playing influenced a whole generation of Brazilian and international drummers, changing forever the face of pop music. Edison was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and died at age 54 in 1990 in Rio de Janeiro after a stay of 15 years in New York.
