A Brazilian Drummer

Born in Porto Alegre, south of Brazil.
Start playing his first instrument, accordion,
at age 12.

Autodidact, start playing professionally
as a drummer at age 14.

Drummer/percussionist of "Quarteto Novo",
first and historical group
of Hermeto Pascoal at age 19.

Considered a prodigy, participates in concerts and/or recordings
of some of Brazil's greatest, like Milton Nascimento, Cesar Camargo Mariano,
Elis Regina, Edu Lobo, Egberto Gismonti in Brazil, and internationally.

1978: Plays on Hermeto Pascoal's group for the next 2 years performing
on Jazz Festivals in Brazil, Switzerland and Tokyo.

1980: Joins Egberto Gismonti's group.
Tours in Brazil, Denmark, Sweden and Norway, and recorded the album "Sanfona".

l982: Releases his debout album as a leader, "Bugre", featuring his own
compositions and arranges.
45 concert tour throughout Europe with Gismonti.
Moves to France, performing with Claude Nougaro, among others.

1983: Organizes his own group, "Nene Band", a sextet with three Brazilians
and three Danes, touring Denmark.

1984: "Jazz Hot" Malone names "Bugre" to its top ten list of the year
Tours in France with "Nene Band" (warming up for Hermeto Pascoal),
cuts a second album "Ponto dos Músicos".
Plays in Festivals in Coutances, Angers, Vienne, Corsica...

1985: Releases his third album, "Minuano".
Tours with his group as well as with Egberto Gismonti, Kenny Wheeler
and Bob Moses.

1986 - Back in Brazil, tours and records with "Pau Brasil".

1987: Returns to France. "Minuano" makes the Brazilian top-ten of the year.
Write original Compositions and Arrangements for the Danish National
Jazz Orchestra, performed live in concert.

1988: Organizes the new line-up "Nene".
Writes a workbook on drums and percussion "Brazilian Rhythms by Nene"
for Zurfluh Editions - Paris.

1989: Tours with Egberto Gismonti, Charlie Haden and Michel Portal in quartet.
Tour and new recordings with "Pau Brasil" in Brazil and Europe.

1990: Album and tour in Japan with Takashi Kako.
concerts with Steve Lacy group.
Tour in Brazil with "Pau Brasil".

1991: New album and tour with "Pau Brasil" in Brazil and Europe.

1992: Zurich Festival with Paulo Moura.
For the celebration of the 500 years of the discovery of America,
composes and plays with Pau Brasil, the "Opera Dos Quinhentos Anos",
with libreto written by Naum Alves de Souza, at the Teatro Municipal de São Paulo.<

1993: Invites Hermeto Pascoal and Arismar do Espírito Santo for
a 45 concerts trio tour in Europe.

1994: Tour in Europe with Hermeto Pascoal and the accordion payer Richard Gallano.
Invited as a drums and percussion teacher to the "Festival de Música
de Campos de Jordão".
Tour in Europe, and recording movie score with the Swiss guitarist Vinz Volanthen.

1995 - Back in Brazil, organizes a new group "Nene & Four de Ases" performing
in many Brazilian cities.
Invited as music and drums teacher to the "27th Festival de Inverno de Ouro Preto"
and also to a seminar called "Seminário de Ritmos Brasileiros".

1996 - Japanese star Lisa Ono's guest on a 18 concert tour in Japan.
Plays at the Jazz Festival of Geneva.

1997 - Guest on the 2nd. Seminar of Brazilian rhythms in Belo Horizonte,
in a meeting that gathered some of the most original Brazilian percussionists,
(Marcos Suzano, Paulo Santos e Décio Ramos, Robertinho Silva), teaching
in workshops, and playing concerts.
Toured Europe with swiss guitarist Vinz Vonlathan and Trio Apampa.
Recorded 2 CDs: Suite Curral Del Rey, released in december,
and Porto dos Casais, to be released in february of 98.
